In this tutorial, we will introduce a fantastic feature that will give you a "wow" experience: Lightroom profile.
To describe the usage and purpose of Lightroom profile in the simplest way possible: these filters provide a wide range of colorful and black-and-white effects, including various color tones. With just a single click of your mouse, you can apply them directly to your photos!
While the Lightroom profile may seem straightforward, there are still plenty of tips and tricks to explore. So, let's dive in and continue reading to discover them together!
In this article, you will learn:
When you open your photos in Lightroom, you'll quickly notice the "Presets" section.
To access the Lightroom Profile panel, either choose "Browse" from the dropdown menu or click on the small grid icon on the right side (Browse Profiles).
Extra Tip:
Raw format photos and non-Raw format photos have different default profiles.
By default, when importing Raw format photos, the "Adobe Color" profile is applied to color photos, and the "Adobe Monochrome" profile is applied to black-and-white photos.
On the other hand, when importing non-Raw format images (like JPEG), the "Color" profile and the "Monochrome" profile are the defaults for color and black-and-white images, respectively.
The Profile Browser panel, as shown in the image below, displays various buttons and sliders. Let's briefly introduce these buttons and sliders:
As mentioned earlier, applying the effects to your photos is as simple as clicking on them with your mouse.
For example, in our case, we selected "Modern 08" and adjusted the Amount to 120, as we felt it would achieve the desired look.
Once you're satisfied with the tone changes brought by the Lightroom Profiles, click "Close" to return to the Develop module and finalize the profile adjustments.
If you really like a particular effect and want to easily find it again, you can click on the hollow star in the top right corner of the effect thumbnail. This will automatically add it to your "Favorites" and the star will become solid.
You can access it anytime from the "Favorites". To remove it from "Favorites," simply click the star again.
You can roughly categorize Lightroom Profiles into two categories: profiles suitable for RAW photos and profiles suitable for non-RAW photos.
Profiles for non-RAW photos are great for creative editing. They work with any file type, including RAW, JPEG, and TIFF. These profiles are designed to create certain styles or creative effects in your photos.
Extra Tip:
When applying non-RAW and custom profiles, you can use the related sliders above to control the strength of the applied profile. However, for profiles designed for RAW photos, you cannot adjust the intensity using the Amount slider.
When you return to the Develop module, you'll notice that the "Profile" is different from a "preset." Presets usually consist of a set of predetermined parameters, but a profile doesn't modify the individual settings in the Develop module. You'll find that none of the parameters in the Develop module have changed.
In fact, a Lightroom Profile applies an effect to your photo, but you can still continue making adjustments to the image.
Here's how you can understand it: the profile gives you a starting point and a creative direction for your edits. In other words, if you're unsure how to edit your photo, you can come here and choose a profile that closely matches the desired look. Then, you can fine-tune the settings based on that effect.
For example, you can apply a profile and then make further adjustments in the Develop module. This allows you to quickly achieve a different and unique effect.
So, a Lightroom Profile is not a mindless filter or a "one-click solution." Instead, it expands the possibilities for your edits. You can preview various effects and let them inspire your creative process.
Of course, it doesn't mean that you have to make adjustments every time you apply a profile. If the effect looks great as is, or if you're lacking inspiration, or if you need to quickly unify the style of multiple photos, using the profile without further adjustments can be an effective method.
For photographers and photography enthusiasts, post-processing photos in Lightroom involves adjusting numerous parameter sliders. It can be challenging to achieve precise control by manually dragging these sliders, and it lacks a tactile experience.
We'd like to introduce you to TourBox, a creative tool beloved by digital artists and photographers. It simplifies every step of your photo editing process in Lightroom, making your post-processing feel effortless and enjoyable, like playing a video game.

Question: Why Can't I Find Lightroom Profiles in Lightroom?
Lightroom Profiles are only available in Lightroom Classic CC version 7.3 and above. So, if you can't find Lightroom Profiles in your Lightroom, we recommend that you update your software to the latest version.
Updating your software has additional benefits, such as compatibility with more camera RAW file formats and optimized algorithms, among other improvements.
Question: Can Lightroom Profiles Be Imported?
Let us explain, this question is a bit complex, and the usefulness of this operation is limited.
Importing Lightroom Profiles is straightforward. Just click the "+" icon in the top left corner of the Profile Browser panel and select "Import Profiles."
Importing profiles dialog box allows you to import only zip files, which are compressed packages containing multiple profiles.
Editing Lightroom Profiles is quite cumbersome. You would need a specialized editor or open them in a text format for editing, which goes beyond the scope of the Lightroom or post-processing knowledge we share.
